Who are the Governors? (see also: Personnel Committee, Premises Committee, Curriculum Committee, Health & Safety Committee, Finance Committee)

The governing body of Oundle CE Primary School consists of 5 Parent Governors, 3 Staff Governors, 3 Foundation Governors, 3 Community Governors and 1 Local Education Authority (LEA) governor.

Parent governors are elected by parents of children at the school; foundation governors are appointed by the Peterborough Diocese Board of Education ; community governors are appointed by the governing body and the LEA governor is appointed by the local authority that maintains the school (Northamptonshire County Council)

The composition of the school's governing body therefore reflects a range of groups from the community and enables the governing body to draw on a wide variety of skills and experiences. Current members include the Headteacher, the Vicar of St Peter's Church, a medical Consultant , two solicitors, a school bursar, IT specialists, HR Managers, a teacher and a special needs assistant.

Mrs Mel Messenger
Our Chair of Governors

The three main functions of the governing body are:

  1. To provide a strategic overview by the setting aims and objectives for the school and by adopting policies and setting targets for achieving those aims and objectives
  2. To monitor and evaluate the school's progress towards achieving its aims and to act as a "critical friend" to the Headteacher and Senior Leadership Team (SLT) by supporting and challenging them in managing the school.
  3. To ensure accountability to the pupils, the parents, the local community, the local authority and the staff with the aim of raising standards and improving the outcomes for the pupils at the school.

The governors are not responsible for the day to day management of the school - this is the Headteacher's role. The Headteacher and SLT are also responsible for the implementation of the strategic framework established by the governing body, the implementation of the school's policies and the internal organisation of the school.

The Headteacher provides information and advice to the governors to enable them to fulfil their functions and reports to the governing body on the school's progress at least once a term.

The governing body meet once a term (six times per year) and delegate some areas of work to committees. The governing body has established the following committees: Personnel, Curriculum, Finance, Premises, Health and Safety, Head's Performance Management, Pay, Staff Dismissal, Pupil Discipline and Marketing & Publicity. Governors are also members of working parties set up to deal with a wide variety of issues including Extended Schools.

Examples of the work undertaken by governors are:
  • Setting and reviewing targets for pupil performance
  • Formulating and reviewing policies, monitoring their implementation and evaluating their effectiveness
  • Approving and reviewing the school budget, along with the Headteacher
  • Interviewing candidates for teaching and non-teaching positions
  • Setting objectives and targets for the Headteacher and monitoring her performance
  • Reporting to parents via the School Profile.
